About Catalina Worthing Insurance Limited


Catalina Worthing Insurance Limited is an insurance undertaking authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Prudential Regulation Authority and the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 468832), pursuant to the European Union (Insurance and Reinsurance) Regulations 2015, to carry on non-life insurance business in classes 1 to 18.

The Company was acquired by the Catalina Group in May 2017 from the Hartford Financial Services Group Inc., (The Hartford) and was previously called Hartford Financial Products International Limited (HFPI). The name was changed to CWIL with effect from 15 June 2017.

The Company was incorporated in 2006 and wrote D&O business. In 2012 the Company was placed into run off and ceased underwriting. On 13 October 2015, an order was made by the High Court of Justice of England and Wales under section 111 and 112 of the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 sanctioning the transfer into the Company of the whole of the insurance business of the Excess Insurance Company Limited, Hart Re and the London & Edinburgh Insurance Company Limited portfolio as described below. The Transfer became effective at
00.01 a.m. BST on 15 October 2015.

Excess Insurance Company Limited (Excess)
Excess was established in 1894 and wrote a mix of Personal Lines, Commercial Lines and Treaty business both in the UK and globally. The major lines written were North American Casualty, on a Direct, Treat and retro basis and UK Employers Liability. It ceased writing business in 1992.
Hartford Fire Insurance Company - London Branch (Hart Re)
The London branch of Hartford Fire Insurance Company, a Connecticut corporation, Hart Re wrote purely reinsurance business, principally in Europe, from 1991 to 2001.
London & Edinburgh
A portfolio of business originally written by London & Edinburgh Insurance Company Limited (L&E) which was transferred from Aviva Insurance Limited. The former L&E reserves represent business mainly arising from four Pools:
 * HS Weavers Pool - L&E participated between 1st January 1972 and 31st December 1976.
 * BD Cooke Pool - L&E participated between 1948 and 1968. From 1962 to 1968. The pool is managed by BD Cooke & Partners.
 * Old Tower pool - this Pool ran from 1st January 1968 to 12th May 1972. There were three members: Phoenix, Continental and L&E, all of who mutually insured and reinsured each other in equal shares.
 * Tower X/Highlands Underwriting Agents pool - a continuation of the Old Tower Pool but with Highlands Insurance Company and American Home replacing Phoenix and Continental. The pool initially operated as the Tower X Pool until 31st December 1975. In 1976 and 1977, the Pool operated as the Highlands Underwriting Agents Pool. L&E ceased its involvement in 1977.

On 18 November 2022 an order was made by the High Court sanctioning the insurance business transfer scheme pursuant to Part VII of the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000, incorporating the entirety of the general insurance and reinsurance business written and/or assumed by AGF Insurance Limited and Catalina London Limited to Catalina Worthing Insurance Limited. The transfer became effective at 23:59 GMT on 30 November 2022.

AGF Insurance Limited (AGF)
AGF was established in 1960 and was formerly known as the Employers’ Mutual Insurance Association Limited, N.E.M. Insurance Company Limited and NEM Insurance Company Limited. AGF also acquired the business of the National Employers Mutual in 1989. It has been in run-off since 1998 and prior to that date, it predominantly had underwritten employers’ liability and public liability insurance in the United Kingdom.

Catalina London Limited (CLL)
CLL was established in 1980 and has been in run-off since 2005. CLL was formerly known as American Re-Insurance Company (UK) Limited, Aetna Re-Insurance Company (UK) Limited, The Imperial Fire & Marine Re-Insurance Company Limited and Alea London Limited. CLL also acquired the insurance and reinsurance business of KX Reinsurance Company Limited and OX Reinsurance Company Limited on 30 November 2017.
